A few weeks back the OrchestratedBEER team attended the Craft Brewers Conference in San Diego and came back tired but optimistic about the future of OrchestratedBEER and the blossoming relationship between business management software and the craft beer industry. Every member of the team that attended CBC spent hours talking to hundreds of industry representatives about the pain points of running a brewery on spreadsheets and QuickBooks.
Excitement, anticipation for growth, and growing pains were among the common themes at the show. Minor frustration was also a subtle tone that lingered beneath all the optimistic layers of excitement and anticipation for growth. About 95% of the breweries we spoke to were managing their brewery using multiple spreadsheets, databases and QuickBooks. Many of the brewery owners we spoke to were frustrated by the confines of limited software solutions. The saying “You get what you pay for” has never been truer when it comes to spreadsheets, hand-written notes and QuickBooks. Gathering data for TTB reports often involves several hours with multiple Excel spreadsheets, and recipes are managed with convoluted, custom-built Access databases. Accountants and bookkeepers were also discovering the limits of QuickBooks when it came to organizing the financials. While the popular accounting software is often sufficient for smaller businesses, the lack of functionality soon becomes a barrier to expansion, and the lack of paper trails can lead to potential auditability issues.
Despite these minor pains, the overall response was incredibly positive. Especially interested were breweries on the verge of expansion. We heard from many brewers who were looking to implement new software at the same time as their new brew house knowing that their current accounting and inventory solutions would not scale with their increase in production. Also interested were first time brewery owners who had experience with business management software in previous careers.
Smaller breweries were attracted to the newest OrchestratedBEER price offering: OrchestratedBEER OnDemand. OnDemand is a cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) pricing option that combines all the core functionality of the standard OrchestratedBEER offering into a monthly license program. This brand new pricing model makes OrchestratedBEER more affordable for small breweries while removing IT-related costs from the equation.
People were excited about what our software could do for them and we were excited to show them how it can help. It’s about time the brewing industry had affordable options for customized business software! Smart brewery owners make finding good enterprise software a priority knowing that growing a business requires organization. If you want your brewery to grow and increase profitability, you need to have processes in place to keep things organized and running efficiently. If you want to grow and increase profitability, you need software that tells you where you’re losing money. If you want to grow and increase profitability, you need to ask yourself these questions:
- Can your spreadsheets automatically deduct inventory or process accounting transactions?
- Is your accounting GAAP compliant?
- How long does it take you to gather information for your TTB reports?
- Do you know how much to produce and when?
- Do you use multiple systems to run your brewery? (Excel, Access, QuickBooks, notes, etc.)
- Are your systems scalable to accommodate your expansion?
- Do you rely on 1 person for crucial data and information?
- Do you spend more time tinkering spreadsheets and databases than you do brewing beer?
- How much is your time worth?
- Are you ready for growth?
If you are unsure about any of these questions, you owe it to yourself to find out how you can maintain control and increase efficiencies in your brewery and/or brewpub. Here are some options to get you started:
